I consistently return to the subject of "In her own space"—topics related to the lives of women. The women of Barbados, where my family has had a home for more than three decades, continue to inspire me. As artist, and as "almost Bajan", I am an observer and a witness— I am constantly on the look-out for people who "speak" to me, for the look or gesture which prods me to hang on to that moment, their moment, in paint. Perhaps it is that I recognize myself in them.

Jorge Luis Delgado Gutierrez, Artist

Suddenly, we find ourselves with works produced by an artist with much talent, but practically unknown.  In this case, it is Cuban artist Jorge Delgado, who in the middle of much adversity has constructed a solid body of work comparable to that of many mature artists whose works can be found in museums.

Creating images that synthesize primitive art and one of the artistic movements in the avant-garde of the twentieth century, any interpretation made of these art works will show that in reality there is evidence that time does not go by as fast as we believe that as much technological advancement we go through, human beings are basically the same.

  Jason de Caries Taylor, Sculptor

In May 2006 Jason de Caires Taylor established the world’s first underwater sculpture park in Grenada, West Indies. Moilinere bay is now home to sixty-five sculptures, covering an area of 800sq metres. The bay on the west coast of Grenada had suffered considerable storm damage over recent years, notably with Hurricane’s Ivan and Emily in 2004 and 2005, and the placement of an artificial structure has provided a new base for marine life to proliferate. The sculptures were also designed to create a diversion from other areas of coral reef currently endangered by over-use from water activities.

The Dancing Spirits of Trinidad

A Photographic Essay of the Stilt-Walkers of Trinidad and Tobago

Seventeen years ago, Glen "Dragon" de Souza founded the Keylemanjahra School of Arts and Culture on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean. The school's mission was to revive the almost forgotten West African tradition of the Moko Jumbies or "stilt-walker", and adopt it into the annual Carnival celebration. Not only would it restore a centuries-old tribal custom that had been squashed by colonialism and slavery, but also de Souza dreamed it would keep underprivileged children from street-life and drugs.
